Brazil: The World’s Largest Coffee Producer

Coffee is so ingrained in Brazilian culture that the word for breakfast, café da manhã, literally translates to morning coffee. That’s no surprise, considering the history the country has with coffee production. Brazil is the largest coffee producer in the world, a status it has held for over 150 years. It currently produces around a third of the world’s coffee beans, but in the past it was responsible for up to 80% of all production.

Coffee plantations cover some 10,000 square miles of Brazil. Production is primarily in the southeast, with the state of Minas Gerais providing around half of all coffee. Given the amount of production, there are an estimated 3.5 million people involved in the industry, with around 220,000 coffee farms.

Coffee Production in Brazil

Brazil grows a number of different varietals of Arabica, depending on the part of the country. In fact, many varietals were cultivated or evolved in Brazil. These include some of the most popular, such as Caturra and Catuai. Another is Mundo Novo, most common in its country of origin and present in our coffees from Brazil.

Since the country and industry are both so large, flavor notes vary greatly depending on the region and varietal. In general, a quality coffee from Brazil will have chocolate notes and low acidity. Brazilians are popular for espresso blends, and they work well with darker roasts.

Regional Brazilian Coffees

Both of our Brazilian coffees comes from Minas Gerais.

Located in the south of Minas Gerais, Sul de Minas has a long history of producing fine specialty coffees. The area is distinguished by its large number of cooperatives, as well as a balance of both large and small coffee farms. It offers a moderate climate, consistent rainfall, and an optimum altitude for Arabica production.

The Cerrado is a broad swath of the country with a tropical savanna ecosystem, unique for growing coffee. The region itself is fairly new to coffee production, as the savanna was traditionally considered a challenging place for agriculture. The sweet aroma and aftertaste of our Cerrado Mineiro coffee reflect the benefits of the area’s high altitude and mild climate.
