Chocolate Connoisseur - Dark Chocolate Covered Coconut - Cafe Britt Gourmet Coffee

Almost no aroma or flavor can better transport you to the tropics than that of the coconut. One bite and you can practically feel the ocean breeze and hear the rustle of the palm fronds. Most botanists cite the South Pacific islands as the original home of the coconut tree. Over the centuries, like a message in a bottle, the coconut floated across vast waters and took root on tropical lands where it washed ashore. In Costa Rica, you will find both wild and cultivated coconut trees on both coasts where they have become an important part of the local agriculture. The coconut tree hides its edible treasure inside a thick husk. When stripped away, the brown shell of the nut can be cracked open to reveal the precious coconut meat, rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals. Considered the most useful tree in the world, the coconut palm not only provides food and drink but also clothing, shelter, fuel and financial security. Hardly an inch of the coconut palm goes to waste. In Costa Rica, coconuts are used in both savory and sweet dishes. Café Britt combines coconut with another local delicacy, enveloping sweetened coconut in rich, dark chocolate.

Chocolate Connoisseur - Mint Hot Cocoa - Cafe Britt Gourmet Coffee

Both chocolate and mint have long, romantic histories with tales of special powers and proof of medicinal benefits. As an added bonus, both capture palates with an alluring aroma and remarkable flavor. The name mint or Mentha finds its origin in Roman mythology. Hades, the ruler of the underworld, had an affair with a nymph named Minthe. His wife, Persephone, was so enraged that she turned Minthe into a lowly plant, to be trodden underfoot. Though Hades could not reverse the spell, he softened the curse by giving Minthe a sweet, pleasing smell. Since the beginning of civilization, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used the herb to cure ailments from digestive problems to headaches to dog bites. The fresh leaves were also strewn around houses and rubbed on tables to spread their fragrance thus earning mint its reputation as a symbol of hospitality. Peppermint’s aromatic flavor comes from menthol, which produces a cooling sensation and brightens airways. Café Britt combines the refreshing mint with high quality dark chocolate and natural cane sugar instead of the commonly used refined sweeteners. The sweet, warm chocolate touched with cooling mint creates an irresistible sipping sensation.

Coffee Connoisseur - French Coffee Press - Cafe Britt Gourmet Coffee

Like many of the best inventions, the French Coffee Press seems to have resulted from an accident. Legend has it that around the mid 1800s, the serendipitous incident happened on a hillside when a Frenchman forgot to add his coffee to his water before boiling it (the usual method.) Improvising, he tossed the ground beans in just after the water had boiled. After the beans rose to the top, he used a piece of screen to press them down. The accidental inventor took his first delicious sip and knew it was a new beginning for all coffee lovers to come. The design of the French Coffee Press as we know it is attributed to an Italian designer who used a glass jar much like a laboratory beaker and fitted it with a plunger and filter to press the beans to the bottom. French Coffee Presses have become an inseparable ally of any gourmet coffee lover. It is Café Britt’s recommended brewing method because it produces the most rich and creamy brew with abundant coffee flavor. The reason it is superior is because coffee oils are not trapped in a paper filter nor burned in a percolator. The ground beans are left to float up through just boiled water lazily and form a rich, thick brew that reflects the coffee bean’s aroma, flavor and true taste.

Nuts Connoisseur - Cashew Nuts - Cafe Britt Gourmet Coffee

Cashew nuts grow from an unusual tree and must go through careful processing before they are savored. The evergreen trees flourish in the extreme heat of the tropics and are readily found near the equator. The small tree is often mistaken for a bush because limbs that spread easily strike the ground and reroot themselves. The gnarled tree grows a small, oval fruit called a cashew apple with a kidney bean shaped appendage. Though deliciously sweet, the fruit is not commercially enjoyed as the ripe, fallen fruit spoils within a day and cannot be transported. The crescent shaped nut is separated from the fruit and yields another unusual surprise. Between the outer shell and the inner nut is a toxic layer of oil that can irritate skin and cause blistering in the mouth. To extract the delectable, edible nut, cashews are roasted in a large, perforated cylinder that rotates at a declining angle above heat so that the oil may be removed. Cashews are graded on both how white they are and the wholeness of the kernel. Café Britt’s fine cashews are sourced only from top farms that guarantee consistently high quality. Its appealing shape, delicate flavor and heart-healthy fat content have made cashew nuts one of the most popular in the world.

Chocolate Connoisseur - Chocolate Covered Cashew - Cafe Britt Gourmet Coffee

Our chocolate covered cashews have lived a surprisingly long and complex life by the time you savor them. Cashews grow on crooked, rather short evergreen trees only near the equator. The bush-like plant produces a sweet, succulent fruit with a kidney bean shaped appendage where the nut resides. The nut has an outer shell that covers both the edible kernel and a caustic layer of oil that must be removed before the nut is consumed. Once the nuts are safely harvested and roasted, we coat them in quality dark chocolate using one of the most ancient forms of candy making called panning. Egyptians first developed this process of coating nuts by rotating them in a bowl while sweet liquid was drizzled atop, evenly covering them. Our top grade, whole kernel cashews are covered with a shiny, dark brown layer of chocolate. It is a pleasant surprise to learn that this satisfying indulgence is not a guilty pleasure thanks to health benefits provided by both chocolate and cashews. Dark chocolate is full of antioxidants that are shown to lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Additionally, not only do cashews have a lower fat content than most nuts, they are high in oleic acid, the healthy fat that also promotes heart health.

Chocolate Connoisseur - Chocolate Covered Macadamia - Cafe Britt Gourmet Coffee

Dark chocolate and macadamia nuts are a marriage of flavors so divine they seem to be a destined combination. From the beginning, both cacao trees and the evergreen macadamia trees have similar preferences, partial to the specific climate and altitude of Costa Rica. We attentively watch over both cacao bean and nut from their infancy ensuring the most healthy and flavorful harvest of each. The union between the two is managed carefully from the beginning. Our choice, whole macadamia nuts are roasted to the perfect level avoiding any smoky or burned flavor and enhancing the natural flavors of the nut. In small batches, we then coat the nuts in a surrounding embrace of 62% cacao dark chocolate. Though candy coated nuts have been enjoyed for centuries, chocolate-covered macadamia nuts were first offered in the 1930s. Once you sink your teeth into these morsels you will agree that the relatively new love affair between these two edible delicacies is a match made in heaven.

Candy Connoisseur - Macadamia Brittle Candy - Cafe Britt Gourmet Coffee

Forms of brittle were likely the first candy ever made by using honey to preserve nuts centuries ago. Café Britt follows a careful process, updating this ancient candy tradition by pairing choice macadamia nuts with a crunchy, buttery candy. Due to their soft texture, buttery flavor and unique nutritional values, macadamias are one of the most sought after nuts in the world. They begin as buds on evergreen trees that thrive in Costa Rica's rich volcanic soils, nurtured by abundant rainfall. After the nuts ripen and fall naturally from the trees, we hand harvest and select only the best nuggets for our brittle candy making process. High quality, natural ingredients are only one of the secrets to crafting this tempting treat. Instead of the high fructose corn syrup commonly used, Cafe Britt makes candy with all natural sugar resulting in fewer calories. We also take care to ensure that our carefully selected macadamia nuts are well dried before making the brittle to keep them from getting soggy and to guarantee optimum crunch. The dried nuts are added to a caramel-textured candy, poured onto sheets and hand cut while still warm. As it cools, the candy becomes hard resulting in the addicting, buttery crunch. Just try to stop at one bite!

Nuts Connoisseur - Macadamia Nuts - Cafe Britt Gourmet Coffee

Macadamia nuts are some of the most rare and highly desired nuts in the world. They grow on evergreen trees that thrive in coastal sub-tropical rain forests. Though not native to Costa Rica, the beautiful macadamia nut trees seem to have found their true paradise. The trees with deep green, glossy leaves flourish in Costa Rica due to the rich, volcanic soils, abundant rainfall and ideal altitude. The mountain air at 500 to 800 meters (1,660 to 2,625 feet) provides just the right chilly bite for the perfect flowering followed by the quintessential macadamia nut. True connoisseurs have found the Costa Rican macadamia nut to be the best-kept secret. The precious trees make you work for a taste of the buttery kernels they offer. We must wait until the nuts fall naturally from the tree before we hand gather them from the forest floor and manually select only the best specimens. Then, with both 300 pounds of pressure and the desire to offer you the best nuts in the world, we crack the strong external shell to harvest the soft, edible nugget nestled within. Indulging in macadamia nuts regularly will not only make your taste buds sing but your heart will also be happy. Macadamia nuts are filled with monounsaturated fats that are known to help lower cholesterol and decrease risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke. Help yourself!

Candy Connoisseur - Coffee Candy Chews - Cafe Britt Gourmet Coffee

Between cups of brewed gourmet coffee, you can enjoy the essence of our premium beans with our coffee candy chews. While the majority of coffee candies are artificially flavored, we use only the finest beans from small farms to bring you the true taste of our native coffee in the form of a sweet, chewy caramel. Top-quality beans are prepared for our candy making and then added to sugar syrup that is carefully kneaded to obtain the desired softness. The fragrant caramel is then continually stretched until it reaches the perfect texture and chewiness. Finally, we cut the candy into bite-sized pieces and wrap each in foil. The large following of fans that rely on our coffee chews thank us for the candy’s perfect texture, rich flavor and energizing pick-me-up. Our large bag provides enough to tuck a handful in every drawer so they are easily accessible for all your moments of need.
