Simbiosis: Piano & Rainforest CD

In a remarkable melding of piano and nature, composer Manuel Obregón traveled to the Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve to make music with the frogs, howler monkeys and spectacular birds of the Costa Rican highlands. These compositions are a “dialog” between piano and rainforest fauna. The first edition appeared in 1999 and continues to be Obregon’s best-known work.

The seven pieces on this CD were composed in the rainforest of Monteverde, located south west of Lake Arenal, and are the result of 36 hours of recording, dialogue and communion with that moisture-laden world of mosses and clouds that travel through the trees.

Simbiosis is a quest for sounds that preceded the invention of instruments. This research achieves masterly moments in The Long-tailed Manakin dance; humorous in the Howler Monkey Blues, and dramatic ones in Requiem for the Golden Frog, an almost mythical species which only existed in these surroundings.
