Almost no aroma or flavor can better transport you to the tropics than that of the coconut. One bite and you can practically feel the ocean breeze and hear the rustle of the palm fronds.

Most botanists cite the South Pacific islands as the original home of the coconut tree. Over the centuries, like a message in a bottle, the coconut floated across vast waters and took root on tropical lands where it washed ashore.  In Costa Rica, you will find both wild and cultivated coconut trees on both coasts where they have become an important part of the local agriculture.

The coconut tree hides its edible treasure inside a thick husk.  When stripped away, the brown shell of the nut can be cracked open to reveal the precious coconut meat, rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals. Considered the most useful tree in the world, the coconut palm not only provides food and drink but also clothing, shelter, fuel and financial security. Hardly an inch of the coconut palm goes to waste.

 In Costa Rica, coconuts are used in both savory and sweet dishes.  Café Britt combines coconut with another local delicacy, enveloping sweetened coconut in rich, dark chocolate.
